Summary of Key Points for 2022 - 2024 Choices

  • You are strongly encouraged to continue with your Humanities and a Language choice if already studying these in Year 9
  • You may change to any of the new courses offered but ideally will not change more than two courses
  • If you have not studied Geography or History in Year 9, it is not suitable to start in Year 10
  • If you have not studied French or Spanish in Year 9, it is not suitable to start in Year 10. German will be available as an option choice in Year 10, even if you have not studied it before, subject to interest and uptake. We will review the current progress of all language students and offer guidance on the best options going forward
  • RE GCSE is no longer compulsory for all students and will not be examined in Year 10. It will be available as an option choice and examined in Year 11 along with all other subjects (see additional information from RE department below)
  • Separate Science is now available as an option and will not be studied as part of the core curriculum. All students will complete Combined Science (two GCSEs). The additional content that allows students to sit separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics will be covered in the option class. This course will be studied at higher level only and will provide our high attaining science students (sets 1-3 in year 9) with the opportunity to develop their scientific understanding
  • All other subjects are open to your child

Religious Studies

For the past three years Religious Studies has been a compulsory GCSE for all Year 10 students.  With changes that have been made to Key Stage 4, Religious Studies will no longer be a compulsory GCSE. It is important, however, that students are given the option to study GCSE RS as an option subject.  We believe those students who really wish to engage with the subject should have the opportunity to study until Year 11, allowing them to study the subject at a greater level of complexity and enjoyment. We also believe in the importance of the study of Religious Education for all students’ understanding of the world’s philosophy, beliefs, and cultures.  In order to support all students, there will be a core component of Religious Education comprising one lesson per fortnight and complementing the LSC curriculum.
