Level Level 2 Technical Award in Fashion and Textiles

The new practical Technical Award in Fashion and Textiles is designed to equip students with the practical skills in Fashion and Textiles they need to progress to further general or vocational study.

They will develop a broad understanding of the sector so they can make informed decisions about their career opportunities. Students will also develop valuable transferable skills including communication and collaboration. 

This qualification is modular and is split into three units. One is an externally assessed exam and the other two are internally assessed.

  • Unit 1: Skills Demonstration
  • Unit 2: Extended Making Project
  • Unit 3: Fundamentals of Fashion and Textiles

What is assessed:  Unit 1 Skills Demonstration

Students undertake a number of mini projects that will allow them to be assessed against 12 practical skills.

How it is assessed

30% of overall qualification, Internally assessed, 36 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) approximately. 72 marks. Each skill will have 6 marks allocated to it across 3 mark bands

What is assessed: Unit 2 Extended Making Project

Students will undertake an extended project that showcases the skills they have developed in Unit 1 and the knowledge they have developed through Unit 3. Students will produce a made outcome in addition to a small portfolio to evidence the planning and development and testing and evaluation stages.

30% of overall qualification, Internally assessed, 36 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) approximately. 72 marks

What is assessed: Unit 3 Fundamentals of Fashion and Textiles

Students will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of the following: materials and components, processes and techniques, tools and equipment, industrial processes, ICT and CAD/CAM, commercial practice and career opportunities

How it is assessed

  • 40% of overall qualification, Externally assessed Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 48 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) approximately, 96 marks


  • Section A: 20 multiple choice questions (20 marks)
  • Section B: Mixture of short answer and extended response questions (76 marks)

Which subjects will complement this course?

The qualification will complement GCSE Design and Technology and other related subjects such as GCSE Art and Design.

The skills and knowledge gained will allow learners to progress to a wide range of courses in both general and vocational qualifications. It is a particularly good preparation for A-level Design and Technology (Fashion and Textiles), related Level 3 vocational qualifications, or an apprenticeship in a related area of employment. This qualification prepares students by developing an in depth knowledge of textile based materials and their practical use within the fashion industry.
