English

Why we study English
English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach students to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, students have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables students both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; students, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.

Our Aim
Throughout Key Stage 3 our focus is on consolidating and further developing students’ skills in the three areas of English: reading, writing and speaking and listening.  Their progress is monitored through regular assessments and independent learning. We set core homework to build on literacy skills and foster enjoyment of the subject, and students are supported to become independent learners by a departmental homework club and the school library.

Teaching English in ability groups from Year 7 ensures that all students work at an appropriate pace and are provided with the necessary balance between stretch, challenge, support and encouragement.

The key skills taught and assessed in English are integral to a student’s ability to achieve across the curriculum as a whole. Topics have been chosen to enable students to engage in moral, social and political debate through the exploration of current affairs versus different social and historical contexts. This helps them to better understand the world around them. Non-fiction texts have been chosen from a range of topics that are prevalent today and will ensure that students are able to view the world outside of Oxted with more open and objective thought.
