A-Level
English Language and Literature A-level is linear. Assessment of a student’s knowledge and understanding of the whole course takes place at the end of two years.

The AQA A-level in English Language and Literature provides an integrated approach, enabling students to deepen their understanding of both language and literature while also broadening and enriching their experience of English.

The A-level has a good, balanced coverage of the two disciplines and this specification encourages students to see how linguistic and literary methods are related and to explore these connections through their own work. The focus is on methods of language analysis, something which underpins each component.

Year 12
In Year 12 there are three distinct units. In this first year we look at ‘Telling Stories’, worth 40% of the A-level; the texts studied include a Paris Anthology as well as Prose and Poetry. We will also begin to prepare for the coursework unit which is an investigation of 2,500-3,000 words.

Year 13
In this final year of A-level there are two units. Exploring Conflict, worth 40% of A-level, assessed through examination, focuses on Writing about Society and Dramatic Encounters and contains elements of both analytical and re-creative writing based on two set texts.

The final unit, Making Connections, worth 20% of A-level, is assessed through coursework and is an independent investigation on a chosen theme and texts which we will have begun preparing for before the summer.
