What we study
Students will study:
- Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’
- Poetry - ‘Love and Relationships’ poems from an anthology
- Pre-Twentieth Century Prose - ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens
- A Modern Text - ‘Blood Brothers’ by Will Russell or ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding
In studying the set texts students should have the opportunity to develop the following skills:
- Reading comprehension and reading critically
This will include:
- understanding words, phrases or sentences in context
- exploring aspects of plot, characterisation, events and settings
- identifying themes and supporting points of view by referring to evidence in the text
- evaluating a writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammatical and structural features
- comparing texts
- Writing
Students will be taught to:
- produce clear and coherent texts, writing effectively about literature and using accurate Standard English

Post-16 Choices
The course prepares students who would like to continue English Language and Literature, or English Literature at A-Level at Oxted School.
