Health and Social Care gives students the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of health and social care services. Students develop a range of practical and transferable skills relevant to different areas of the health sector and the basics of caring for others. It provides excellent career opportunities for those who wish to work in the area of Health and Social Care and other careers. 

Course Content and Assessment Details
The BTEC in Health and Social Care is equivalent to one GCSE. The work is assessed through teacher assessment of portfolio evidence, and one unit qualification is externally assessed through examination.  

The BTEC is awarded at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. 

Process
The course is made up of three components:

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development – Portfolio / Coursework Component
Students learn about the different stages of development and the changes that occur at each stage. Students look at the positive and negative influences on individuals at different stages in their lives and investigate their differing care needs.  

Component 2: Health & Social Care Services and Values - Portfolio / Coursework Component
Students learn about what is good practice in health and social care and what the care values are when dealing with clients. They consider what is meant by a duty of care, non-discriminatory practice and inclusion, as well as how to empower individuals by giving them choice and independence and they are expected to role play a situation demonstrating these care value. Students consider the high standards needed when caring for people. 

Component 3: Health and Well-Being – Externally  Examined Component
Students gain a knowledge and understanding of the different factors that affect the health and well being of individuals including genetic and lifestyle factors. They explore aspects of physiological indicators and how making lifestyle changes can improve the health and well-being of individuals. Students will learn how to set long term and short term health improvement target while considering obstacles to achieving these targets and ways to minimise the impact of these obstacles.

 

 

Post-16 Choices
A-Level / Level 3 Health and Social Care which can lead to nursing - adult and child, learning disability, mental health; social work, teaching and work in the caring service industry. The subject offers a wide opportunity for careers in areas of the health services and social services, Sociology and Psychology.
