Higher Education

The Sixth Form Team are proud of the level of support that we provide to all sixth form students who apply through UCAS for places on Higher Education courses.

In Year 12 we introduce the students to the Unifrog software early on in the academic year.   The school pays for the software which provides an excellent way of searching for University courses by area and different predicted grades.  The platform is also a search tool for careers and also MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) offered by Universities as a way of preparing for Higher Education study.  In June, year 12 students are taken off timetable for a ‘Higher Education Day’ to spend the day creating a UCAS log in and finding out more about how to create a winning personal statement as well as each stage of the University application process.

In Year 12 there are opportunities to go on trips to universities and to UCAS events.  The main events are:

  • University Fair at Caterham school
  • Visit to Oxford or Cambridge University
  • University Experience day at University of Portsmouth
  • Visit to UCAS Higher Education Conference at Kent Showground

The school also arranges for a University Admissions Officer to speak to students about choosing universities and personal statements. Assemblies run through Year 12 and Year 13 where student finance, student accommodation and UCAS extra, and clearing services are explained.  Support is given to students who apply each year to universities across the world including America as well as European countries.

Lunchtime UCAS Clinics run from September through to January.  It initially takes place once a week but after October half term is offered twice a week in the Library study area.  Students work on their personal statements at the clinic as well as discussing course choices and completing their application forms under guidance.  All UCAS applications are checked thoroughly by a member of the team before the application is finally submitted.
