Wider Sixth Form Experiences

At Oxted School we offer a large array of experiences for our students; both academic and social. We believe that it is important for there to be opportunities for students to develop leadership skills alongside their studies, leading to a true community spirit. These leadership and enrichment opportunities will inspire our students to move out of their comfort zone in order to grow in self-confidence.

Academic and Citizenship

For students to thrive, it is important that they have an awareness of issues in the world around them and help where they can. We also believe that learning is not just limited to classroom and it goes far beyond. Below are just some of the opportunities we offer our sixth form students.

Mentoring

Year 12 students are trained in becoming a mentor to students lower down the school. They may assist them with subject issues or emotional worries. We carefully pair the students to ensure it is the best fit for both parties. This is a great way for our sixth form students to give back to the community.  For further details please contact Mrs Baydas (Diane.Baydas@oxted.thpt.org.uk

Oxbridge Preparation Group

Please read details of this on our UCAS Early entry page or contact Mrs L’Estrange (Katharine.Lestrange@oxted.thpt.org.uk)

Paired Readers

Year 12 students studying both English courses are required to give up one of their free periods to support the reading of students in Year 7 and Year 8 during their library lessons.  This collaboration provides support for our younger students and are advantageous to our sixth form students as they become more confident and develop their communication skills as well as becoming an active citizen in the community. For more information please see Miss Harman (abigail.harman@oxted.thpt.org.uk

Subject Captains

Each subject will have subject captains who have a responsibility to promote the subject both within the school and also at open evenings.  Duties vary by subject but normally include; supporting younger students in class and speaking to visitors and prospective parents at open evenings.

Achievement Breakfasts

Students in sixth form have achievement breakfasts after each set of reports for those demonstrating excellent achievement throughout their subjects. This is a great way to reward those hard-working students and catch up with the sixth form team.

Friday Football

Our sixth form students have their own Friday football league where teams compete every Friday lunchtime from both Year 12 and Year 13. This enhances community cohesion throughout the year groups and is a great way for them to burn off some steam.

Social Events

There are a variety of social events for sixth form:

  • RAG Week
  • Fresher’s ball to welcome our new year group
  • Christmas party and Christmas quiz to bring in the seasonal spirit
  • Year 13 have their prom, which is a lovely way to say farewell
  • Graduation ceremony in September to celebrate their wonderful achievements

Careers and Emotional Support

We are lucky enough to offer external support services who come into our school to support our students. We have trained counsellors who offer one to one session for any student who feels they would benefit from this service. We also have Innervate Careers, an external professional careers advisory service. Students are given an hour’s one to one session and follow up sessions if they require it.
