Duke of Edinburgh's Award Ceremony

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Oxted School has experienced another hugely successful year. Last Wednesday evening, we were delighted to celebrate the success and commitment of participants as one of the largest and most successful school centres in the Southeast.

This is the first DofE Awards Ceremony that we have had in three years. We were very pleased to be bringing the tradition of our Award Ceremony back after a break due to COVID.

We were particularly delighted to welcome our guest speaker, Lucy Shepherd Adventurer. Lucy is an explorer and dedicated environmentalist. Aged just 23, Lucy was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society for her ground-breaking exploration work, and she is also the youngest member of the council of the Scientific Exploration Society, one of the world’s oldest exploration charities.

Lucy made a mark on the global stage after successfully completing her recent jungle expedition across an isolated part of the Amazon. Lucy and her team of indigenous Amerindians spent 50 days moving through uncharted and untouched jungle, facing dangers every single day.

We were able to formally recognise each student’s success and dedication to their own Award. Not only have they overcome the challenges of the Expedition section and learnt new skills, but they have also enhanced the reputation of their age group within the community through their positive commitment to voluntary work. As a cohort they have given 2,834 hours to the community: Bronze: 1,352 hours, Silver: 1,222 and Gold: 260 (still in process).

The Award at Oxted School continues to offer outstanding experiences to our students. Last year we had 150 Year 9 students take part in their Bronze Award and we continue to gain impressive numbers at Silver Award level with 45 Year 10 and Year 11 students taking the next step on their DofE journey. We also have a team of 40 Sixth Form students at Gold Award level. They will brave the ultimate test in the unpredictable conditions of both Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons in the summer term.

None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of Mrs Banwell and her team. Although the Award Leaders provide the public face for the Award, at Oxted School alone, 35 members of staff and ex-students have given up evenings, weekends, and holidays to provide Award opportunities to our students.
