Oxted School Second in ESAA Cross Country Cup

Some days are special for a school and this weekend was one of them. The national finals of the ESAA English Schools Cross Country Cup saw a fantastic team of Oxted School runners take on and overcome England’s finest schools finishing national runners up in the 2019 junior boys Cross Country Cup Final. With a show of the highest sporting ability, we can proudly boast to be one of the top schools for running South of England and second nationally just four points behind winner’s Dr Challoner's Grammar School.

The record of our athletes, both individually and as a team, is truly remarkable. As the competition moved from County, regional and national level our team moved from good, to better and best. First in County, first in Southern Region and second nationally, by just four points, finishing ahead of all but one school in England. Oxted improved their winning margin against all schools, opening with 58 points and a three-placing gap on Judd School, at the nationals. The athletes who ran for Oxted leave a junior sporting record unlikely to be matched!

Oxted was praised in the national final on having two of the top three individual finishers. The record of Jacob H and Joseph H is incredible with amazing performances in the County round, South East Regional round and certainly the national finals. Joseph finished first in the County round, second in the South Region and second nationally (11.25). Jacob finished second in the County round, fifth in the regional and third nationally (11.34).

Although our top two were crucial ingredients in our dominance this was very much a team success. Oscar P continued to show he is an exceptional talent at home with the very best in England, finishing 17th (11.56) just behind Dr Challoner’s top two finishers. Thomas V finished 58th (12.37) as our fourth scorer confirming his meteoric rise as a quality athlete capable of big-time success. Joseph W finished 83rd (12.52) in the top half of a national field showing typical his power, drive and strength. One of the youngest athletes of the day Ben H, finished with real spirit and a 100% attitude in 145th place in a time of 14.06. He was determined to make the most of his national finals opportunity, even a year down and against national level athletes.

A memorable weekend for our runners at home with the best and enjoying the challenges of cross country running at the highest level. Those who were there to see it, will long remember the inspired running of our history maker’ over the sweeping cross country course at Mount St Mary's College, Spinkhill, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this event.
