WW1 Centenary Competition Winners

Following the reception at the House of Commons on Tuesday 6 November for their winning entries in the WW1 Centenary competition below is an interview with Bridie, Olly and Elise:

What was your entry about?

Bridie: prayers of intercession which talked about the role of officers, regular soldiers, nurses and the government. I wanted to show how it wasn't just one person who played a part in the war

Olly: it was a leaflet about the role of East Surrey in the war. It included nine fact files of local soldiers. I found it interesting researching people from Oxted who played a part in the war

Elise: I drew a picture of the East Surrey Regiment badge surrounded by poppies. I did this to link the idea of remembrance and the role played by the East Surrey Regiment

What was your favourite part of the day?

Bridie: Listening to the talk from MP and Military historian, Keith Simpson when he talked about his family history and the way war was remembered when he was a child

Olly: listening to the talk by Captain Ali Lalani when he talked about the importance of wearing poppies and how much it means to him to see people supporting the cause by wearing the poppy and remembering those who have been injured or killed

Elise: receiving the book of entries to see all the great and unique entries included from different schools

What would you say to the members of the East Surrey Regiment who fought in the war if you could?

Bridie: Thank you for shaping the world we live in, without you, the world would be a very different place

Olly: Thank you for sacrificing your life for our freedom

Elise: Thank you for sacrificing your lives for us
